Common causes for hindlimb paresis or paralysis in dogs include intervertebral disk herniation, fibrocartilaginous embolism (FCE), and fractures or luxations of the vertebral column. Assessment for neurologic deficits through the neurological examination - including spinal and withdrawal reflexes - is key to localizing the problem and deciding on a diagnostic and treatment plan. The focus of this Specialty Update is hindlimb paresis or paralysis caused by thoracolumbar spinal cord lesions, the concept of spinal shock and how it can impact neurological exam findings and create confusion for the practitioner when evaluating patients.
