In this case-based learning segment Dr. Christine Calder - a veterinary behaviorist - discusses compulsive and repetitive behaviors in companion animals. These types of behaviors are rooted in normal maintenance behaviors such as eating, grooming, or walking but performed out of context in an exaggerated, repetitive, or ritualistic manner. Examples include - but are not limited to - tail chasing, fence running, shadow or light chasing, self-mutilation, and pica (ingestion of non-edible items such as rocks, dirt, sticks, or cloth, etc.). Dr. Calder discusses the case of Idjit - a food-obsessed cat - to illustrate an approach to working up animals with a compulsive / abnormal ingestive behavior and pica. The discussion includes medical and behavioral differential diagnoses for compulsive behaviors, diagnostic work up considerations, as well as management strategies and considerations for affected animals. Running time: 28 mins Free Registration for Premium VetVine Membership subscribers or $28 (pay-per-view).
